Meet Mark Miller and the DAY PROGRAM at Wayside Christian Mission

THE DAY PROGRAM

In August, 2010, Wayside Christian Mission started a new program opportunity for clients staying at our emergency shelter.  After a 30 days of emergency housing, our clients are required to enter one of several structured programs.  One of those programs is our Day Program.

The Day Program teaches basic life skills and health education in a supportive environment.  Classes meet daily after lunch, and last until 4 p.m. just before the evening meal.  This gives clients time to make medical appointments, complete employment searches, and meet obligations for themselves or their families.

The life skills classes are taught by community health care professionals, nursing students, volunteers with expertise in appropriate areas, and our Wayside program staff.  There are two, back to back educational classes.

After these, clients meet in small group settings with a Mission case manager.  The case manager helps clients process and begin to integrate the information they heard in the education presentation.  These interactions enable the case manager to assess other case needs, and to tailor the educational applications.

Mark Miller manages the Day Program.  He reports this structured education and support programming has greatly benefited our clients.  Many are eager to join the group well before their first 30 days of emergency shelter is complete.  Now about forty (40) women attend each class.

"Mary," one of the mothers attending the Day Program, has said,  "The sessions on food and nutrition have been extremely beneficial."  She suffers from diabetes and other health problems.

Inspirational Thought

If God be our God, He will give us peace in trouble. When there is a storm without, He will make peace within. The world can create trouble in peace, but God can create peace in trouble. -- THOMAS WATSON
